Black Variatus Platy Overview

  • Size: Typically 5–6 cm (2–2.5 inches)..
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males are smaller and slimmer with a gonopodium; females are larger and more rounded.

Habitat & Origin

  • Native to eastern Mexico, but the black morph is a result of selective breeding in the aquarium trade.
  • Adaptable to a wide range of water conditions.

Aquarium Care
  • Tank Size: Minimum 15–20 gallons.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 18–26°C (64–79°F)
    • pH: 7.0–8.2
    • Hard water preferred
  • Diet: Omnivorous – flakes, pellets, algae wafers, and live/frozen foods like brine shrimp or daphnia.
  • Behavior: Peaceful, active, and social. Great for community tanks.

Breeding

  • Livebearers: give birth to live fry.
  • Very easy to breed; provide plants or hiding spots for fry.
  • Can hybridize with other platies and swordtails.
